On a freezing, cold, rainy day in early March, Pocketforests.ie joined some 2nd years from Rosary College to plant an 8 tree orchard. Ashe and Amy from Pocketforests.ie suggested we pick a shape so we chose a U shape facing a beautiful new wall mural on the school grounds. The 8 fruit trees include several varieties of apple, plum and pear.
We used hessian sacks from a local coffee roaster as a collar around the new trees to keep the grass away. We then covered over the natural fibre sacks with some compost and woodchip, given to us free of charge by a local tree surgeon. Some students were so wet from the rain that the needed to go home at lunchtime to change their clothes. But we were all so proud of the end result.
